Your shade garden looks tired, your clay soil stays soggy after every rain, and the deer treat your plants like a buffet. Sound familiar? We work with yards like this every week across the west side of Cleveland, and there is real, practical hope for your landscape.
At Avon Landscaping, we design and install planting plans that stand up to clay-heavy soils, mature tree shade, and heavy deer pressure. I’m Josh Brunner, and my team and I blend soil science, smart plant selection, and steady maintenance so you get a landscape that thrives instead of survives.
Cleveland’s west side is known for dense, clay-based soils and beautiful mature trees that bring welcome shade along with twigs, leaves, and acorns. Add a strong local deer population, and you have a recipe for frustration.
Here is the truth we share with every client: deer do not read plant lists. There are plants they almost never touch, but if they are hungry, they will try nearly anything. Success comes from choosing plants that are less appetizing, improving the soil so roots can thrive, and maintaining the landscape so new installs establish quickly.
Clay can hold water around roots and cause plants to fail from too much moisture. We begin with a soil test to understand pH and texture. That data guides everything we do.
We do not plant straight into hard clay. We till and amend the beds, blending in quality topsoil with a balanced mix of silt, sand, and clay plus organic compost. The result is the Goldilocks zone for roots. Not too wet. Not too dry. Just right for healthy growth and drainage.
While nothing is deer proof, we lean into plants they are less likely to browse. Ornamental onions are a great example, and plants with a bit of scent tend to be less appealing to deer. We tailor choices to your exact neighborhood pressure since some streets see far more browsing than others. In shadier areas under mature trees, we select varieties that can handle lower light and compete with tree roots once the soil has been properly amended.
As long as you maintain the landscape, most plants can ride through periodic deer nibbling and the stresses of our local climate. Proper watering, seasonal cleanups under trees, and timely pruning all help new installations establish strong roots and recover quickly if browsed.
We are not a one-truck operation. If something goes wrong in that first year, we are back to make it right.
Healthy soil plus thoughtful plant choices equals resilience. When roots are in a well-amended bed and the selections are less attractive to deer, your landscape can bounce back from browsing, handle summer storms, and look good in the shade.
